Coordination in irrigation systems: An analysis of the Lansing–Kremer model of Bali
نویسنده
چکیده
Farmers within irrigation systems, such as those in Bali, solve complex coordination problems to allocate water and control pests. Lansing and Kremer’s [Lansing, J.S., Kremer, J.N., 1993. Emergent properties of Balinese water temples. American Anthropologist 95(1), 97–114] study of Balinese water temples showed that this coordination problem can be solved by assuming simple local rules for how individual communities make their decisions. Using the original Lansing–Kremer model, the robustness of their insights was analyzed and the ability of agents to self-organize was found to be sensitive to pest dynamics and assumptions of agent decision making. 2006 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A robust budding model of Balinese water temple networks
Ethnohistory, genetics and simulation are used to propose a new ‘budding model’ to describe the historical processes by which complex irrigation communities may come into existence. We review two alternative theories, Wittfogel’s top-down state-formation theory and common-pool resource management, and suggest that a budding model would better account for existing archaeological and ethnographic...
متن کاملA Simulation-Optimization Model For Capacity Coordination In Make To Stock/Make To Order Production Environments
Capacity coordination, as the tactical level of hierarchical production planning in hybrid MTS/MTO systems, includes numerous important decisions. In this paper, two of these decisions i.e. finding the best strategy for the acceptance/rejection of incoming orders and determining orders’ due dates – are investigated. Also a simulation model is proposed to evaluate the efficiency of the presented...

The Batur Temple (Pura Ulun Danu Batur) in Kintamani is located at the geographic apex of a so-called ritual water hierarchy and has conventionally been described as a purely religious institution responsible for the coordination and distribution of the irrigation water. However, an analysis of historical palm leaf manuscripts reveals that the temple had a firm economic base with corresponding ...
متن کاملIntroducing the Time Value of Money in a Non-consignment Vendor Managed Inventory Model
Vendor managed inventory (VMI) is an integrated approach for buyer–vendor coordination, according to which the vendor (supplier or manufacturer) decides on the appropriate buyer’s (retailer’s) inventory levels. The time value of money has not traditionally been considered in evaluating VMI supply chain’s total inventory cost in any studies up to now. Therefore, in the present study a new model ...
متن کاملSimultaneous coordination of review period and order-up-to-level in a manufacturer-retailer chain
In this article, manufacturer-retailer supply chain coordination (SCC) has been developed under periodic review inventory system. In the studied model, the retailer as downstream member uses periodic review inventory policy and decides about review period (T) and order-up-to-level (R). Also, the manufacturer as upstream member faces EPQ system and determines the number of shipments from manufac...
